    For some reason the scene and reference collections appear to be empty. Also, thank you for such a clear and concise introduction to Blender. I'm finally able to start to understand some of the complexities of the program.

      They appear empty until you enable them :) It's a way for Blender to keep the clutter out of your scene. Glad to hear you enjoyed the tutorial though!
