Tracking a Signboard occluded by a subject in Mocha AE2018

Hi Tobias, firstly thanks for creating such great tutorials, I learned a lot from it.

Now, coming to the issue, actually I'm tracking a signboard occluded by a subject. I've tracked the signboard and the subject seperately and tracks shows well in MochaAE but as soon as I bring the the tracking data in AE and paste it a layer, the track is just not in place.

I have recorded the whole process of the tracking and the exact issue.

(Don't worry it just 5min long)

Sample video footage to experience the problem firsthand:

Before posting this topic I've also seen all the Tracking related topics in the forum and I got one topic (Mocha Export Data)

which has somewhat similar problem like me and I applied the solution given there in this video

but it still didn't work for me.

P.S: In my recording (google drive link above), I haven't applied the solution shown in the video, bcz at that time I didn't find this solution. But I have already tried it and it didn't work.

plz have a look at it.

Hi ankkol2011,

Sorry for my slow response, I've been a little bit sick over the last few weeks and am only now getting around to answering everyone's questions.

The one thing that threw me totally off is the 'shape' you used to define the mask you want to track. Why did you not just draw an outline around the sign but create this swirly self-overlapping shape?

Self-intersecting Mocha shape

Shapes in Mocha should never overlap or intersect with themselves - that will not create anything that you can later convert into an After Effects mask. In AE you create masks the same way, as simple, non self-intersecting shapes. Mocha is no different

Try using a simple shape around the outline of the arrow and give that a shot!

Let me know how you go with that.

Actually, I've already tried many times with the simple shape but can't able to track, once the subject covers the object.

On the youtube I got one tutorial which shows method for doing scenes like this ,that's why tried it. And the track was relatively more accurate than the simple shape.

I don't know whether its right or wrong [INVALID TEMPLATE: {type}] way to track but it seem to work a little better for me and so I tried.

Hehe, I think that's more a 'hack' than an official way of tracking something that is occluded.

Check out the official quick tip from BorisFX on how to use 'manual track' to solve this issue much more easily: How to use Manual Track in Mocha to track occluded objects

If you use the 'hacky' approach, you may just need to create a new (clean) shape and link that to the motion of the (hacky) shape so you have something clean that you can use in AE for the insert.

If you use Manual Track you should have a nice clean shape right off the bat that you can use

Hope that helps!

Well, I tried a lot as you said , and yes the manual track works great and I got a pretty good track of the signboard.

But when I export track data and paste it on a solid layer in ae, the track just got misaligned. I tried several times but nothing worked.

I also applied the methods of this video : Mocha Export Data but it also didn't work.

I've again recorded my current approch to show you the exact problem. (4:30 mins )

My Footage on which I am trying to track

p.s: If anyone in the forum wants they can download my Footage and try to track the signboard , it would really be a great help.

Hi ankkol2011,

Unfortunately I no longer have the standalone version of Mocha, only Mocha AE which works as a plugin.

However, two things I am noticing from your footage:

  1. You are going INTO the pre-comp and applying the mocha exported corner pin data
  2. You are explicitly selecting the Transform on the solid layer when you paste

Try to simply select the pre-comp (in your base composition) and paste the data onto that. That should apply an actual Corner Pin effect to the layer that makes the solid follow your tracking data.

I actually have a tutorial for that process in one of my older Mocha AE tutorials: check it out here!

Hope that helps!
