Hi,

sorry if this has been asked before but i can't find it.

I want to key a layer (like a render element from 3ds Max, Wire color) and use that key as a mask on another layer.

Just to be clear, i don't want to use the key itself on the other layer, i want to remove the exact same area that was removed on the keyed layer but applied on the other layer as a mask.

Hope someone can help me and thank you!

Hi,

What you are looking for is a Track Matte Track mattes allow you to control the transparency of one layer using another layer. Here's a tutorial for it:

There is also a 'Set Matte' effect that you can use to achieve a similar effect

Works just fine so far. So simple i feel a little dumb!

I'm mostly a 3dsMax guy, then Photoshop. Been using AfEf for a while but only for specifics on the moment basic needs. But i'm embarking on a more ambitious project, so i'll come back here. Both for advice and possibly to share my experience.

Thank you!

No worries at all! Everything (no matter how simple) can seem hard if you don't know about it. Fortunately, most things are also surprisingly easy to learn. Let me know if you have any other questions!
