Floating carrots tutorial - no export shape data in '19 version?

Hi, after watching the floating bowl of carrots tutorial, I made it to the final step successfully, only to see the 'export shape' button missing. I previously figured out how to apply tracking data using the effects controls in AE, but there is no step by step on how to apply the shape layer to get the same effects as Tobias. Instead, when I play around with adding in tracking info instead, along with Create AE masks, I'm left with multiple bowls of carrots and footage that is all messed up.

Hope someone can help me here. I hate these nasty surprises at the end of mostly successful tutorials, only because I'm using a newer version. Can someone please provide step by step, beginning with how to export my shape layer from Mocha into AE? Many thanks.

I assume you're referring to this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xo0905z3jg

The process is pretty much the same for the Mocha AE plugin:

  1. Make sure the layer you want to apply the roto to has the Mocha AE effect on it
  2. Do your roto in the Mocha AE GUI
  3. Close and save the mocha project
  4. Click the "Create AE Masks" button in the Mocha AE plugin effect controls

That's all you should need to do.

If you've created the effect on a different layer, just copy the effect to the layer you need, or copy the masks after you've created them.

To be fair, the tutorial is 3 years old. Three years is a long time in visual effects software.

Thank you! I'm a beginner to Mocha AE, so I take notes with every tutorial, but I couldn't find any information online for substituting Tobias's step with the new version. Next time I'm at the pc, I will try only using your suggestions. Instead of the carrots, I used a pack of gum (easier), but I had nobody to assist me, so I had to extend my arm out a bit, and I think the pack of gum keeps overlapping the mask I created around me. But even after readjusting the mask using keyframes, I was still left with two packs of gum, though the Mocha gum didn't have my hand attached to it (my only success), and the other pack of gum kept showing over the mask. I'm sure it's a simple solution and may need to be refilmed, but your simple answer of providing the proper step forward has helped me solve at least one issue, so thank you very much!

Hi Fkf,

I'm just wondering how you are going with your project? Did you manage to resolve the issues you were having?
